  10.    When you type with your word
  11. processor, characters are added to
  12. the screen. If you look closely,
  13. you'll see that the characters are
  14. composed of dots.
  15.     One of the expansion cards,
  16. called a display card, is for the
  17. monitor.  The simplest card can
  18. display only ASCII text on the
  19. monitor. A Hercules card can
  20. display text and two color (black
  21. plus one color) graphics. This is
  22. called monochrome. A CGA card can
  23. display text in up to 16 colors or
  24. graphics in up to 4 colors. An EGA
  25. card can display text and graphics

  28. in a higher resolution, meaning
  29. more, smaller dots, in up to 16
  30. colors.  And a VGA card is even
  31. higher resolution and can handle
  32. up to 256 colors.
  33.    The monitor does not know about
  34. text. All it knows is how to put
  35. dots on the screen. The display
  36. card has to tell it about every
  37. character, number and punctuation
